Orkhon Waterfall (Ulaan Tsutgalan Waterfall)

One of the Central Mongolia’s best sights is the Orkhon Falls. It is said that during the Quaternary period, a volcanic eruption occurred at the source of Tsagaan Azarga River. The magma flew down the Orkhon Valley creating thick layers of volcanic rock which stretched out for several kilometers. Mongolia’s longest river, with length of 1124 kilometers,The Orkhon river passes through these layers creating the gorge of the waterfall today. It is 22m deep and 10m wide, and dotted with pine trees. The water doesn’t run all year and will only start to flow after the first strong summer rain. The best time to see it depends on the rainfall, but late July and August even autumn is good time.

 

Nearby waterfall is fine area for swimming, camping, horse riding,  photography, fishing, and cycling.

 

The waterfall is located 495 km from Ulaanbaatar, 135 km from Kharkhorin, and 30 km from the nearest town Bat-Ulziit of Uvurkhangai province. It can also be reached in 2-3 hours from Tovkhon monastery.
