The ger, a traditional Mongolian tent, continues to be the core of family life for nearly half of the country's population. Opting for a ger stay provides a glimpse into this age-old lifestyle and serves as an excellent base for exploring Mongolia's captivating landscapes and wildlife. Crafted from lightweight and well-insulated felt, these unique dwellings can be swiftly disassembled, packed, and relocated to greener pastures or in response to changing seasons.
While deeply rooted in history, the ger lifestyle seamlessly incorporates elements of modernity—you might spot a ger tent adorned with a satellite dish even in the remotest corners of Mongolia. Staying in a ger camp is a highlight of any journey to the country.
Common Tourist Ger Camps
Travelers venturing beyond Ulaanbaatar typically find accommodation in visitor ger camps. These camps, hosting up to 30 tents clustered around a central ger for meals and gatherings, provide a communal atmosphere for sharing stories and enjoying the evening. Accommodations are basic, often featuring shared toilet and shower facilities and electricity from a central generator. Individual gers are simple yet cozy, furnished with two, three, or four wooden beds, along with bedding, tables, chairs, and flasks of hot water. Some ger camps offer game rooms and open playgrounds.
A central wood-burning stove, kindled each evening and replenished in the morning, warms the ger. Evenings are an opportunity to savor the natural scenery and unwind in the tranquil wilderness. Dinner, typically consisting of mutton and potatoes or filled dumplings, is a communal affair served in a large central ger. Throat singing performances, a traditional Mongolian art, often follow dinner, and guests might discover that their hosts include a national throat singing star.
Heating in the Ger Camp
The wood-burning stove efficiently warms the ger, with staff attending to the fire as needed. Guests can request a small amount of wood for self-management, and additional blankets are available upon request, particularly in Gobi desert ger camps where wood supply may be limited.
Wi-Fi Availability at the Ger Camp
Wi-Fi is not available in remote ger camps. However, guests can purchase 3G SIM cards in Ulaanbaatar for internet access near towns and at ger camps within the network reception area.
Ger Camp Restaurant and Meals
Ger camps feature large central gers or lodge-style restaurants serving Mongolian and European-style meals. Reflecting nomadic traditions, meals consist of simple, nature-derived ingredients such as beef, mutton, chicken, pork, pastry, noodles, rice, and seasonally available vegetables. The restaurants also offer soft and alcoholic drinks.
Options
Some ger camps provide ensuite gers with attached private bathrooms. If you prefer this option, please inform us in advance, and we can arrange ensuite gers for an additional fee.
