  • Full description

In the heart of the Gobi Desert lies Khamriin Khiid, a monastery reconstructed in the early 1990s. Renowned in Mongolia for possessing the most potent spiritual energy convergence globally, it attracts travelers seeking rejuvenation and blessings for health, wealth, and fertility. Situated approximately 500 km from Ulaanbaatar, a nine-hour journey, popular sites around the monastery include Breast Ovoo, a meditation cave complex, and Bayanzurkh Uul. While ger camps are available for multi-day trips, our group opted for an overnight drive, costing only 25 USD per person with six contributors sharing fuel expenses. This is a reasonable price, given that Ulaanbaatar's vehicle hire typically starts at around 60 USD, excluding fuel.

Breast Ovoo, reached after a night drive, is a sacred cairn where individuals, primarily women, make offerings of milk and millet for fertility, health, and maternal blessings. The site exudes a profound connection with nature, evident in the clockwise circling and offerings made to the "breasts." The Shambala Energy Center, the main focus of our trip, emerged from the ashes of Khamriin Monastery in 1990. Founded by Dulduityn Danzanravjaa in 1820, the monastery aimed at creating a more enlightened lifestyle, including a library, theatre, museum, and school. Despite Communist purges in the 1930s destroying Khamriin Khiid, its resurrection 25 years ago attracts numerous visitors.

Shambala, surrounded by 108 stupas, features the Gelugpa Temple of Wisdom and Nyingma Temple of Compassion. The red rocks within are believed to carry stronger energy, prompting visitors to take off their shoes and lie on the ground for revitalization. The cave complex, a network of caves where monks meditated for 108 days, offers a view over desert dunes and shrines with offerings. Pilgrimage at Shambala concludes with a symbolic rebirth, passing through a narrow entrance into another cave. Bayanzurkh Uul, known as "Black Mountain," offers wishes for men at its summit, with women having a designated ovoo halfway up. Despite not reaching the peak, the stunning landscape makes the visit worthwhile.

The trip, though lengthy, is economical and enjoyable in a group, providing a unique opportunity to explore spiritually significant places in Mongolia. A recommendation is made to combine this journey with a visit to Sainshand for the Museum of Danzanravjaa, adding depth to the understanding of Khamriin Khiid's founder.
